Spalted Birch

Birch grows very quickly and spreads across the heathlands.  The birch saplings have been coppiced by volunteers and many bundles from the Ridges and Spencer’s Wood were used for the Queen’s Birthday beacon at Runnymede.  Larger Silver Birch logs that have been on the ground develop spalting (flecks of black in the wood produced by fungi) producing interesting colouring in  bowls.
